Top Underrated Romance Anime

In this list, I'm going to share anime that I think haven't gotten the recognition or popularity they deserve as an anime in itself but also as a romance anime. Some anime have been mentioned very little in the romance tags yet, in my opinion, should be. And I can tell you that I have become a professional in researching anime.

  • Fena pirate princess

Release date: 2021

Themes: Romance, comedy, adventure

Episodes: 12

Fena Houtman found herself alone on an island as an orphan for years. Until the day she is supposed to marry a powerful man. But the turn of events will take an incredible turn and an adventure full of history, mysteries, secrecy and travel will begin.

This anime was an amazing surprise for me. I had completely missed it since other anime were more expected at that time. Seeing the poster and reading the synopsis, nothing could predict the story, the emotions and the incredible romance that I was going to find. This anime gives me chills every time I watch it. The music, the quality is nothing less than incredible. Being an Akatsuki no yona fan, I was more than happy to find a similar atmosphere and anime.

  • Seijo no marioku wa Bannou desu

Release date: 2021

Themes: Romance, comedy, fantasy

Episodes: 12

Sei was an office worker like any other until she got carried away into a fantastical and magical world. In fact, she was called by this world who performed a ritual to invoke a holy saint who will save their world. But from the beginning, dramas will take place and the adventure will seem difficult for our protagonist. I really enjoyed this anime. The colors are vivid. It really is a feel good anime with a powerful and charismatic character. It was very refreshing to watch in a blind era of harem and ecchi romance. Season 2 has been announced and I can't wait to see it.

  • Kono oto tomare

Release date: 2019

Themes: Romance, comedy, school life, music

Episodes: 26 (2 seasons)

Takezô Kurata is the last member of the Koto club, a club dedicated to the traditional Japanese string instrument. If he does not find new members, the club will be closed. He will have to find new members. Thus, among the new members, there is Chika Kudô, who has a reputation of being a delinquent and Satowa Hôzuki, a cold prodigy of Koto. This anime may seem light and look like a basic school anime, but it is much deeper. The main characters are not a duo that we are used to see. Two introverts with hearts bruised by the past. The music was magnificent and will be appreciated by lovers of traditional music. This anime really reminded me of Kaishou wa maid sama, which is one of my favorite anime.

  • Shin no nakama

Release date: 2021

Themes: Romance, action, fantasy

Episodes: 13

Red was part of the most powerful group supposed to protect the world from evil creatures. But due to misunderstandings and conspiracy, he was ousted and now lives a peaceful life as a pharmacist. This anime seems to have been very popular in Japan and a new season has just been announced. But for westerns, I haven't seen this anime appearing much, especially in discussions for anime romances or top romances. I stumbled upon the anime by accident and had it searched for me only to realize that it had some romance in it. I think the poster is also confusing and you would think it is another isekai with a harem that lacks depth. But I can tell you the romance is real, the MC is very calm and relatable.

  • Otome youkai zakuro

Release date: 2010

Themes: Historical, romance, comedy, fantasy, action

Episodes: 13

The Meïji era, in a universe where humans and yokais could potentially coexist and live in peace. But that displeases many, who have resentment towards the other party. This is why a group of young fox girls will have to cooperate with a delegation of young soldiers, in order to promote good understanding between humans and yokais. Between cliché, expectations, fear and assumptions, cohabitation may be difficult, especially with our protagonist. Blending humor, romance, friendship, action and suspense, this anime has a lot to offer. I found this anime while searching desperately through anime recommendation conversations. I was very surprised not to see it more quoted.

  • Shūmatsu Nani Shitemasu ka?

Release date: 2017

Themes: Romance, drama, fantasy

Episodes: 12

It has been 500 years since mankind disappeared due to the fearsome beasts. There are only a few races left living on floating islands but are still threatened by these monsters. William Kumesh is the last surviving human and his destiny will take a radical turn when he makes new acquaintances.

I put this anime in this list because I didn't think it was a legit romance anime when I saw it pop up some times in anime discussions. Again, the promotional posters may suggest it's a harem or something. I started SukaSuka without much expectations and I can tell you that I left a part of my heart there. It's a dramatic anime in every sense of the word, in story, romance, and characters.

  • Summer time rendering

Release date: 2022

Themes: Romance, drama, fantasy

Episodes: 25

Shimpei decides to return to his native island after years without news. This island is surrounded by surprising and mysterious phenomena. As soon as he arrives, he will witness something bizarre that will make him question everything he thinks he knows about the world. Let me tell you, the story is crazy and was in my opinion one of the best anime of its season. It's a really complete anime that satisfies when you finish it. Full of twists without losing coherence or falling into the ease of the script. We never get bored throughout the episodes.

There is a mysterious and oppressive atmosphere and the graphics are clean. I was very surprised because at the time, nothing indicated that there would be romance.
