Top 1990s Romance Anime

 

Feeling that the new generation anime isn't your cup of tea? I got you. There is nothing more nostalgic and comforting than watching old generation animes. Especially in terms of romance, it's interesting to see how mores and standards changed with time.

Here is my top 5 romance anime released between 1990 and 1999 :)

• Boys over flowers 

Release date: 1996

Tsukushi Makino starts going to a private high school but not really by choice. Her parents sacrificed everything to send her there, where all most important people of the country send their kids. The goal? for her to find a rich and handsome husband. Makino doesn't agree with the school regulations, especially after meeting the school most famous group : F4, regrouping the richest boys. Anyone going against them ends up being bullied. Will that stop Makino? Heck no. I can guarantee that you will not be bored watching BOF! Following a very determined female main character, the anime is filled with drama, love triangles, but also social classes differences.

Save the world with other warriors while hiding her identity. This anime is full of nostalgia as it was part of a whole generation's childhood. If you are looking for a simple story mixed with magic and comedy, this is for you.

• Kare Kano

Release date: 1998

Yukino is one of the most brilliant student of her school and she is not very modest. She tries hard to be the best, but ends up being in competition with boy, Arima, who doesn't care much about glory. Yukino has a different personality that hides from others. The problem? The person she hates the most discovers her secret. If you want an anime where the couple actually gets together before the end of time, you'll be served ! This anime has an original setting in a simple context, good main characters and a refreshing comedy.

• Marmalade boy  

Release date: 1994

Following the divorce of her parents, Miki is surprised to learn that her parents are in fact both falling in love with a couple. So they decide to exchange their partners. You think the situation is already funny enough? This couple also happens to have a son. All these people will therefore have to live together and learn to know each other. An eccentric family, misunderstandings, jealousy and drama, all that mixed with romance. That's how i would describe this anime. If you think it's too long, don't hesitate to check some fillers lists !

•  Fushigi Yuugi                                

Release date: 1995

Themes: Adventure, historical, romance, fantasy

One day like any other, at the library, Miaka and her friend are suddenly drawn by a book into an ancient world where the two are assigned unexpected roles: priestesses. But, although they were friends in their world, they find themselves being enemies in this world. They will both have to surround themselves with new people, discover this world as well as its secrets. If you are looking for a beautiful love story, funny characters, twists and turns all that into an isekai, you should give 'Fushigi Yuugi' a try.
