Top Enemies to Lovers Romance Anime

In this list, I'm going to share anime that have stories that start with hatred between the protagonists and eventually turn into love one way or another. I will also insert 'enemies to lovers' stories where their status, past, or social position make them 'natural' enemies.

  • Kimi to boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen

Release date: 2020
Themes: Action, romance, fantasy
Episodes: 12

Two countries are at war: The country of witches, with people with magical abilities and the Empire. The two MC are enemies and will clash several times on the battlefield, but it might not last long.
This anime is kind of a modern version of Romeo and Juliet. A beautiful animation, a story that makes sense and remains to be developed and two talented heroes. It's not a very innovative anime, nothing new, but it's interesting anime. A season 2 has been announced.

  • Kamisama hajimemashita
Release date: 2012
Themes: Action, romance, fantasy
Episodes: 25 (2 seasons)

Nanami finds herself alone, homeless, abandoned by her father with debts. But she will meet a very curious character, who will reach out to her and offer her a place to sleep. It turns out that this man left her much more than just a bed.
This anime is one of the best known in terms of fantasy Shojo anime. It manages to balance the context, the humor and then little by little this visceral hatred that will turn into unshakable love.

  • Hataraku maou-sama!
Release date: 2013
Themes: Action, romance, fantasy
Episodes: 25 (2 seasons)

Due to his defeat against a hero, the Demon king flees with his commander and ends up in Tokyo where the language, the lifestyle and everything is new for them. They will therefore have to get used to this world and its customs to survive until fate takes over.
This is a super funny and really quirky anime. Beautiful graphics, endearing characters and with a touch of romance. It took almost 10 years for a season 2, which was released in 2022 and another is on the way for 2023!

  • Masamune-kun no revenge
Release date: 2017
Themes: School, romance, comedy
Episodes: 12

When he was younger, Masamune Makabe's comrades were not interested in him since he did not have the standards of beauty. After years of trying to stay in good physical shape, he is determined to get revenge. But revenge is not so simple or easy, especially when your heart does not follow the intentions of your brain.
It's not a very original anime and can be a bit cliché at times, but it's an interesting anime with evolving relationships. The MC torn between his old self and the new him. Season 2 arrives in July after 6 years of waiting!

  • Koi wa sekai seifuku no ato de
Release date: 2022
Themes: Action, romance, fantasy
Episodes: 12

The story centers on the romantic relationship between Fudô Aikawa, the leader of Gelato 5 whose goal is to bring peace to the world, and Desumi Magahara, Queen of Death and leader of Gecko whose goal is is world domination.
This anime is really hilarious and lighthearted. It has a parodic and absurd side with the reference to the Power rangers, and the female protagonist who has to pretend to be a bad villain. The romance is really central to the story despite them being enemies. I think this anime is really underrated.

  • The legend of Basara
Release date: 1998
Themes:
Action, romance, adventure
Episodes: 13

The story begins in an apocalyptic and war context. Japan is divided and governed by different kings from the royal family. But the people survive under the pressure of a dictatorship. In an eastern village twins will be born: a girl and a boy. A prophet announces that one of these two children is the chosen one by whom the dictator's tyranny will end.
This anime is one of those that I would really like to see the sequel.
Unfortunately, it was only made to advertise the original manga. It really has the potential to be one of the best anime of all time.

  • Skip beat
Release date: 2008
Themes: Comedy, romance, drama
Episodes: 25

Kyoko was ready to do anything for her bestfriend Shotaro until she discovers that he was deceiving her the whole time. Hurt, shocked and disappointed, she will have only one goal : Revenge. Skip beat is definitely one of the best anime ever! The anime is hilarious and full of cliffhangers. If you want something funny, with a unique female character, you will not regret watching it.

  • Otome Youkai Zakuro

Release date: 2010

Themes: Historical, romance, comedy, fantasy, action

Episodes: 13

The Meïji era, in a universe where humans and yokais could potentially coexist and live in peace. But that displeases many, who have resentment towards the other party. This is why a group of young fox girls will have to cooperate with a delegation of young soldiers, in order to promote good understanding between humans and yokais. Between cliché, expectations, fear and assumptions, cohabitation may be difficult, especially with our protagonist. Blending humor, romance, friendship, action and suspense, this anime has a lot to offer.

  • Boys over flowers

Release date: 1996
Themes: Comedy, romance, drama, slice of life
Episodes: 51

Tsukushi Makino starts going to a private high school but not really by choice. Her parents sacrificed everything to send her there, where all most important people of the country send their kids. The goal? for her to find a rich and handsome husband. Makino doesn't agree with the school regulations, especially after meeting the school most famous group : F4, regrouping the richest boys. Anyone going against them ends up being bullied. Will that stop Makino? Heck no. I can guarantee that you will not be bored watching BOF! Following a very determined female main character, the anime is filled with drama, love triangles, but also social classes differences.
